NEW YORK (AP) — Maritza Davila has won the Democratic Party primary to replace disgraced former state Assemblyman Vito Lopez in Brooklyn's 53rd Assembly District.
Davila is a community activist who was endorsed by Lopez and had worked for his nonprofit group, the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council. She had previously run an unsuccessful campaign to become a city councilwoman.
Lopez, the once-powerful former boss of the Democratic Party machine in Brooklyn, resigned last spring rather than face probable expulsion from the Legislature over allegations that he sexually harassed several women on his staff.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Davila captured 52 percent of the vote. She defeated other candidates Jason Otano and Charveys Gonzalez in Tuesday's primary.
The general election is Nov. 5.
