I realize this is an old article. I too have been curious about this map. It is a map of the boundaries of the Cattaraugus Reservation as it was designated in the 1797 Treaty of Big Tree. I have spent two years trying to find out why the boubndaries were changed in a supplemental Treaty in 1802. The best explanation I could find (in the Joseph Ellicott papers) was that the Indians requested the change. I was never convinced that was the reason. I am interested to read that the change was requested by T. Jefferson so that the USA could have the lake shore. Could you help me find a primary source document for that comment? I would be ever so grateful for a clue. Thank you.
