Local Economic Impact Of Wall Street Meltdown Is All In The Numbers
There has been a great deal of talk in the last week about the connection between the troubles on Wall Street and the impact on “Main Street”. As individuals, our initial concern is with our retirement accounts and investment earnings. We’re told to sit tight and ride it out and it seems like good advice.
But as Chautauqua County and several municipalities begin to map out spending plans for 2009 and as school districts gear up to start their budget processes for next year, there is a more immediate impact that we likely will not be able to “ride out”.
Though difficult to quantify because of market volatility and pending federal action, it is safe to say that the financial hit to the State of New York will be staggering.
